XLH often runs in the family
X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a genetic condition, meaning it can be passed down in families.
The “X-linked” in XLH means it is passed through the X chromosome.
Chromosomes are structures in your cells that carry your genes. Women have two X chromosomes (XX), while men have one X and one Y (XY).

If a father has XLH and the mother does not:
All daughters will have XLH. No sons will have XLH. This is because daughters inherit an X chromosome from their father. No sons will have XLH because sons get the X chromosome from their mother.

If a mother has XLH and the father does not:
Both sons and daughters have a 50% chance of having XLH. This is because all children inherit an X chromosome from their mother.
XLH doesn’t always run in families—it can also happen randomly. This is called a spontaneous case. About 3 out of 10 people can develop a spontaneous case of XLH.
People with a spontaneous case of XLH can still pass the condition on to their children.
